Try a hard reset, hold power button and home buttons down for 10 seconds to restart.
Keep trying the upgrade. This link may help. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4310089?start=0&tstart=0

mine is fine now after going through the recovery process. Seems strange if you are still having repeated problems. Sounds like you just need a new phone. hopefully they’ll replace it for you. If you have AppleCare theyll replace it for free. good luck!!!

It worked! I spent hours on this with my phone! Apple dude even sent me a tutorial, but holding the home button an extra 10 seconds and changing usb ports were not mentioned. Thank you!!

This worked for me as well – after a few USB port switches and some patience, I finally heard the recognition beeps as I plugged it in. Went to restore mode and had to go to factory settings, but at least I had done a backup before trying to install the OS.

    Thanks for the help!

Did you have to set up your phone as a new iphone? And THEN go into iCloud to get all of your contacts/ etc. back?

  8. Thanks for this post! My iphone was hanging at this screen and I tried 4 usb points, but then read your post and decided to try a usb direct to the computer instead of through my usb hub. Finally it connected, but wasted 4 hours of time. Thanks I appreciate your post.

Same prob. Only my Iphone5 connects to iTunes and what was only supposed to be a speakerphone update froze my phone on that USB screen and says my iPhone was found in restore mode and needs to be restored to reconnect with iTunes! I clicked on restore phone and it warns me that it will be restored to factory iPhone settings and all my media will be lost! So I’m afraid to do it. I have backup on the icloud and it said after the restore I will have that option but I don’t want to lose my recent Picts/videos. Any ideas? I’m going to try the above suggestion for now, to hopefully have new options appear and iTunes to recognize my device. They should warn us about issues attached or reported by these updates of theirs.

I’m so glad it helped!! but bummer about your apps 😦 you should be able to reinstall them again for no charge though? I think the App Store remembers if you already paid for them.

Hi. My daughter’s phone has the same problem, though not from an update. It has the connect to Itunes/Emergency calls only frozen screen with a lock at the top. She has several pictures from her first year of middle school that are not entirely backed up! I am trying as hard as I can to find a way to NOT do DFU restore – I don’t really care about the device, we can get a new one under her contract for nearly nothing, but I want her to have her photos. Is there ANY way to salvage the content for her? it is a 3GS. We have one computer and 3 Iphones, and she has only plugged it in once to back it up. All her recent photos from the spring are not backed up. Itunes senses her phone, but says it cannot connect to it because it is “locked”. I have no idea how it got this way….age of phone? Mom (me) who set restrictions then forgot the passcode for restrictions? (her passcode to get in is known to all of us though). I already took it to “UBREAKIFIX” and they couldn’t do anything without a hard restore. I am trying every avenue to avoid that. Thank you for any help you can provide.

THANK YOU!! I looked everyone for help on unfreezing my phone. I did everything they said – push this button, hold that button, plug in the cord unplug the cord. Nothing worked. Yours was the only place that said, “try a different USB port.” Skeptically, I tried another port and, as you said, VIOLA (wah-lah), it worked. Thanks for posting this.
