Just 3.5 miles away from Turtle Bay Resort is a small family-run eatery in the Kahuku Sugar Mill called Kahuku Grill. This is our second year feasting here, and once again it lived up to its growing, favorable reputation.
For seafood lovers, the grilled fish and “garlic lovers” shrimp are a must, along with the “world famous” coconut shrimp. For my hubby, the coconut shrimp were too sweet but, he’s also not a coconut fan. I prefer purer shrimp flavors so, I also preferred the “garlic lovers” shrimp over the coconut shrimp. But, the coconut lovers in the house were raving about their coconut battered shrimp.
Carnivores will love their juicy burgers and teri (teriyaki) chicken. The teri chicken was my hubby’s favorite, while the juicy, thick paniolo (cowboy) burger, on a fresh bun, with crisp lettuce, a sweet steak tomato slice, and secret sauce, was popular with the kids. I am a fan of the chicken and burgers too…yum-o!!
And, the organic Pupukea greens, served with a light, tasty vinagrette, add a fresh, healthy crunch to any entree. Love, love, love!
Really, there is something to satisfy everyone at this homespun, kid-friendly, service-with-a-smile, easy-on-the-pocketbook eatery. If there is a negative, it is only that the food is made to order…translation: this is a slow food eatery. But, the freshly prepared meals are worth the wait. And, heads-up…bring cash. Like many of the mom and pop establishments here, credit cards are not accepted. So, grab a seat and chillax at one of the 10 plastic tables or get it to go and have a picnic on the beach. Whatever you order, your taste buds will thank you!
